Ingredient Preparation

The initial step in tablet production involves preparing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) along with excipients. This preparation is critical, as the choice and quantity of excipients depend on the intended formulation and characteristics of the final tablet. The materials are typically weighed and dispensed accurately to maintain the integrity of the formulation.

Mixing Ingredients

This stage, commonly referred to as blending, involves combining the API and excipients to achieve a uniform mixture. Various types of blending equipment, such as V-cone, double-cone, and octagonal blenders, are employed based on batch size and material properties. Granulation Techniques

The latter is particularly favoured in pharmaceutical settings due to its efficiency; hot air circulates through a perforated bowl containing the granules, effectively removing moisture while preserving material integrity.

Compression is the pivotal step where granules are formed into tablets of uniform shape and size. This process requires a tablet press that applies substantial pressure to the granules, compacting them into solid forms. The characteristics of the tablet, such as hardness, thickness, and friability, are influenced by the compression parameters.

Coating Applications

After compression, tablets undergo coating, which serves multiple purposes including enhancing appearance, improving stability, and masking unpleasant tastes. Coating can be achieved through different methods, primarily spraying and dipping. The choice of coating technique affects the dissolution properties of the tablet, particularly for enteric-coated formulations designed to resist dissolution in acidic environments.

Finishing Touches: Polishing and Branding

Once coated, tablets are polished to remove any rough edges, resulting in a smooth, shiny surface. Branding, though less common, involves printing vital information on the tablets using food-grade inks, which may include the product name or dosage strength.

Quality Assurance and Packaging

Before packaging, rigorous quality checks are conducted to validate that the tablets meet established specifications. Quality control analysts perform various tests, including physical assessments, dissolution, and content uniformity. Following approval, the tablets are packaged according to customer specifications, whether in blisters, strips, or bottles, before being distributed to the market.
